This year we have the honor and privilege to celebrate 100 years of ministry as First Baptist Church of Overland Park. Throughout the year we will hold many celebrations to recognize God’s faithfulness over the last 100 years even as we look forward with great anticipation for what God has in store for this community of faith for the next 100 years! Just to put things in perspective, let’s take a look back at what was happening in the world in 1914:
• The Panama Canal opened after 10 years of construction.
• The world’s first red and green traffic lights were installed in Cleveland.
• Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in what began World War I.
• A first class stamp cost $0.02.
• The Boston Braves defeated the Philadelphia A’s to win the World Series (4-0).
• Henry Ford introduced an assembly line for the Model T.
• Union Station in Kansas City opened.

At the time of this church’s founding, the community of Overland Park was very new. According to the Overland Park Historical Society, our town traces its roots back to 1905 when founder William B. Strang Jr. arrived and began plotting and planning for this community. First Baptist Church was founded as part of that community just 9 years later.

Even as we look back on the next 100 years, we also celebrate how God has formed and shaped us into the community that we are today. One hundred years later and we are still seeking God’s will and still radiating God’s love to the community around us. So even as we look back, we also look forward in great excitement and anticipation for the future that God has prepared for us. Throughout this year of celebration we also seek and discern how God is calling us to radiate God’s love for the next 100 years. We invite you to join us on that journey this year: this journey of honoring the past, celebrating the present, and preparing for the future!
